Thursday, Feb. 19, 2015: Wrestling wildcards for state meet revealed

Leading off today: Four Warsaw wrestlers with a combined season record of 174-12 were among 120 competitors added Wednesday to the NYSPHSAA wrestling championships.

Eighth-grader Sam Wolf (99 pounds), junior Aaron Mann (220), and seniors Josh Griffith (152) and Dylan Royce (195) were added to the Division II field competing Feb. 27-28 at the Times Union Center in Albany. Mann's 53-3 record made him the winningest wrestler added through the wildcard process. Griffith was a qualifier for the 2014 tournament.

John Glenn, Shoreham-Wading River and Watkins Glen were awarded three wildcards apiece. Among the John Glenn trio, Matt Porrello (152) and Edwin Rubio (heavyweight) were 2014 state-meet qualifiers.

Section 11 has captured at least five Division I championships for six consecutive years. With a stagging 21 wildcards added to its 15 large-school automatic qualifiers, Suffolk County would seem poised to reap another slew of titles.

Section 3's roster of 20 wildcards includes 18 in Division II. Section 5 is next on the list with 18 wildcards, including 12 in the small-school tournament.

You can view the full list of wildcards here in PDF format.

A quick plug: I don't mention this particular website and this particular feature nearly enough, but the Long Island Wrestling Association website has a stellar database feature that allows easy sorting of past champions and place-winners in the state meet.

Check it out and show 'em some love by clicking the PayPal donation link on the left edge of the page to send a few bucks their way.

A record run: Suffern sophomore Kamryn McIntosh broke the national record for the girls 600 meters Tuesday during the Section 1 indoor track championships at The Armory.

McIntosh shaved more than five seconds off her personal best to finish in 1:28.78. Janine Davis of North Arlington (N.J.) Queen of Peace set the previous record of 1:29.27 in 2005.

"At first I thought I was a little tired and was hearing things," McIntosh told The Journal News. "Then I saw the

time on the board and just was very, very happy."

Said Suffern coach Joe Biddy: "She got a gift from the gods."

That's all for today: Sorry for delivering a short roundup today, but a bug has been kicking my butt for the past 36 hours. I need to save my strength to work some 9-to-5s at my real job the rest of the week.
