Leading off today: Gates Chili offensive lineman
Jacquis Webb has given the Rutgers football staff a verbal commitment, Scout.com reported over the weekend.
Webb, who checks in at 6-foot-4 and 290 pounds, was on campus for an unofficial visit.
He is the third member of the New York Class of 2014 to make a non-binding decision. Poly Prep defensive tackle Jay Hayes committed to Notre Dame long ago, and West Genesee running back Naesean Howard has opted for Syracuse.
Webb said he was influenced in part by Rutgers linebacker Quentin Gause, who attended nearby Bishop Kearney.
CBA mourns: Former Albany CBA athlete Torey Williams died in a motorcycle crash in Savannah, Ga., early Saturday morning. He was 18.
According to the Savannah Morning News, Williams lost control of his 2003 Yamaha on a curve in the road at 4 a.m. Saturday. The 2012 CBA graduate was attending Savannah State University.
He was a standout at wide receiver on the CBA football team as well as midfield in lacrosse, where he was a four-year varsity player. Williams also set school records in the high jump.
"The nicest, most approachable kid you could imagine," CBA lacrosse coach Tim Vivian told The Times Union after his team defeated Suffern on Sunday. "He always had a smile on his face. He was a big part of the CBA family."
CBA players wrote the initials "TW" on white tape and stuck them to their helmets and gloves. They started the morning with a prayer service at the school's chapel.
Ratings progress: Chaminade (Class A), Garden City (B) and Shoreham-Wading River (C) open the season ranked No. 1 in the New York State Sportswriters Association boys lacrosse rankings.
The girls rankings will begin next week.
Format change: I might be the last person in the state to have learned about this, but the annual New York Upstate/Downstate All-Star Football Game is Syracuse is undergoing a major format change.
