Wednesday, Jan. 9, 2013: NYSSWA announces all-state football picks

Leading off today: Baldwinsville running back Tyler Rouse has been selected the 2012 Class AA football player of the year, the New York State Sportswriters Association announced Wednesday.

In Class A, Lawrence junior quarterback Joe Capobianco was selected the player of the year.

The announcement came in conjunction with the release of the all-state teams in Class AA and Class A. Selections in Classes B, C and D were announced last week.

The NYSSWA's Steve Grandin edited the all-state team with help from reporters, league officials and coaches across the state.

Fairport blanks Pittsford: Greg Weyl scored a one goal and assisted on two more to power Pittsford to a 3-0 win over third-ranked Fairport in Division I hockey Tuesday. Andrew Clement and Nick Panara also scored for the Panthers, ranked ninth in the state by the NYSSWA.

The outcome further tightens the top of the pack in Section 5.

Pittsford owns a win over Fairport, which defeated No. 8 Greece Athena/Odyssey 5-4 earlier in the year. Athena/Odyssey owns a 3-1 win over Pittsford but dropped 4-1 decision to No. 7 McQuaid.

Lourdes wins: Sophomore Emily Ferreri scored 21 points for No. 15 Our Lady of Lourdes in a 54-43 girls basketball win over No. 15 John Jay 54-43 in a matchup of state-ranked Class AA teams from Section 1.

Lourdes forced 10 first-quarter turnovers en route to a 21-9 lead, and Ferreri poured in 10 points in the third. Calli Balfour led John Jay with 15 points.

Nomination deadline coming up: The deadline for nominations for Mr. Basketball and Miss Basketball -- arguably the most prestigious award presented in any sport by a New York organization -- is coming up Jan. 31.

Varsity coaches as well as sports reporters in New York State can nominate seniors who meet the criteria that can be found on the Basketball Coaches Association of New York website.

Even if you're convinced that there's an overwhelming favorite for the award, just making the cut as a finalist would look pretty good on the resume of an outstanding senior player who plays at a high level on the court, is in

good academic standing and shows leadership and character.

The nomination form is on the BCANY website.

Section 3 scored a sweep last year as Dajuan Coleman (Jamesville-Dewitt) and Breanna Stewart (Cicero-North Syracuse) were honored.

Care to help? As you may know, we ended publication of the weekly New York State Sportswriters Association newsletter in the summer of 2012. Most of the membership fee went to cover the cost of the 46-50 newsletters per year, but what was left after printing and postage helped defray other expenses.

Now, online advertising covers most but not quite all of the expense of providing rankings, news and reference material to readers of NewYorkSportswriters.org and its related sites such as RoadToGlensFalls.com.
