Leading off today: Call it a split decision for player of the year in New York boys high school basketball.
Omar Calhoun of Christ The King won Gatorade's award last month after Jamesville-DeWitt's Dajuan Coleman snared top honors in March by earning Mr. Basketball from the Basketball Coaches Association of New York.
And it was a draw this afternoon as the New York State Sportswriters Association crowned Calhoun as its player of the year in Class AA and Coleman took the Class A edition of the award.
Players of the year and all-state teams in all five classes were announced. The full NYSSWA all-state lists have been posted to the RoadToGlensFalls.com website.
Rounding out the list of players of the year are Collegiate seniors Connor Huff and Ryan Frankel, who shared the Class B award; Tuckahoe senior Sky Williams in Class C; and Sackets Harbor senior Zach D’Alessandro in Class D.
A total of 266 players from 214 schools made the all-state list, whittled down by the NYSSWA's Steve Grandin from more than 600 nominations. Mount Vernon, Holy Cross, Harborfields, Rochester Bishop Kearney, Watervliet, Burke Catholic, Pine Plains and Batavia Notre Dame landed three players apiece on the squad.
Shen's selection: Freshman coach Joe Murphy was approved by the Shenendehowa school board on Tuesday to replace Hall of Famer Ken Strube, who retired as girls varsity coach this spring.
Murphy's freshman teams have gone 68-3 since 2008, including three perfect seasons.
"We are thrilled to have a coach the caliber of Joe Murphy to replace Ken Strube," AD Christopher Culnan said. "Ken Strube set such a high standard during his tenure as a Section 2 coach here at Shenendehowa. We are confident that Joe will continue to uphold those standards that everyone in the Clifton Park community is accustomed to."
Feagin's decision: Destini Feagin enjoyed her visit to the University of Cincinnati last weekend and committed to continue her basketball career with the Bearcats, The New York Post reported.
Nazareth teammates Darius Faulk (West Virginia) and Brianna Butler (Syracuse) had previously committed to Big East schools.
Feagin transferred to the Brooklyn school from Indianapolis Ben Davis last summer.
Harris on the move: Former Half Hollow Hills West standout Tyler Harris is transferring out after one year at North Carolina, blogger Adam Zagoria reported.
The 6-foot-8 Harris, the younger brother of Milwaukee Bucks rookie Tobias Harris, averaged 1.8 points and 1.2 rebounds as a freshman.
