Sunday, Sept. 25, 2011: Saturday's New York football recap (con't)

[ CONTINUED FROM PAGE 1 ]

The schedule breaks in Sachem East's favor at the moment. The only two remaining games against teams with winning records are against West Islip and Lindenhurst in mid-October.

Old dogs, new tricks: It's not as though Aquinas has never been capable of throwing the ball, but the Little Irish have made their reputation -- five NYSPHSAA Class A championships and a No. 1 ranking this fall -- by running it down opponents' throats.

This year is shaping up to be a bit different. Sure, 5-foot-8, 192-pound junior Billy Lombardi (70 carries, 734 yards and nine TDs) is bowling over the defenders that his offensive line doesn't seal off. But QB Cory Benedetto continues to post big numbers, the latest coming in a 42-0 win over archrival McQuaid.

Benedetto was 9-for-11 for 175 yards and two more touchdowns. For the season, the senior is 38-for-48 for 854 yards and 12 TDs.

"It's great to have guys like Cory at quarterback, Taylor Byrne and Jahmahl Pardner at receiver," Lombardi told the Democrat and Chronicle. "If you don't cover those guys, they are going to pick that secondary apart. I'm a benefactor."

Downstate, New Rochelle is rolling out a new look that should concern Class AA competition across New York. Coach Lou DiRienzo is taking advantage of quarterback Khalil Edney's abilities by lining the offense up in shotgun formations and no-huddle sets.

New Ro, the five-time defending sectional champ, didn't flash the look for long in beating Carmel 34-0. But it was enough to break the perception that they'll only throw as Plan B.

"We're finding our way through it," DiRienzo told The Journal News. "It's something new for us and I think the kids are getting more acclimated to it, I'm getting more acclimated to it, and hopefully we can keep building on it."

Junior Jason Ceneus returned the opening kickoff 87 yards for a score and Edney finished 4-for-5 for 81 yards.

Not what we expected to see: No. 4 Hoosick Falls vs. No. 16 Tamarac in Class C, one of the weekend's very few games between ranked teams, turned out to be anti-climatic.

Tamarac fumbled 11 times in a driving rain, losing six, and turned the ball over eight times in a 53-16 loss.

"I can say this: We're a much better football team than 53-16," Tamarac coach Erick Roadcap told The Times Union. "What I said to my players at the end is, 'It's embarrassing. You should be embarrassed. We're much better than that. Hoosick Falls had the same conditions. They dealt with it and did what they needed to do. They acted like Section 2 Class C champions and we have to fix it.'"

Hoosick Falls raced to a 34-0 lead through two quarters and has outscored its four opponents by 149-0 in the first half. Brad Burns ran for two touchdowns, caught a 30-yard scoring pass, recovered a fumble, forced another fumble and recorded two sacks.

Big numbers: Luke Spitzer of Lynbrook ran nine times for 288 yards -- including TD runs of 75, 71 and 95 yards -- to key a 42-21 win over Levittown Division.

Senior Richard Czeczotka was 13-for-16 for 264 yards and a career-high five touchdowns for John Glenn in a 42-13 win over Shoreham-Wading River. Nick Wagner caught three of the scoring passes and rushed for another TD.

Kenmore West's Martin Bailey tied the school record for TDs in a game with five in beating Niagara Falls 49-31. He finished with 219 yards on 21 carries.

Chad Kelly was 17-for-23 for 262 yards, two passing TDs and three rushing TDs in one half of play as St. Joe's blew past Central Mountain (Pa.) 61-28.

Panama 27 beat Pine Valley 27-0 as Tyler Marsh picked off three passes.

A-P-W set school records for total yards (664), rushing yards (518) and points in a 71-13 win over Alexandria Bay. Skylar Wheeler ran four times for 114 yards and was 5 of 6 passing for 146 yards.

Erin Parker ran 16 times for 326 yards and scored four touchdowns for Roosevelt in its 61-38 win at Valley Stream North. Parker's scoring jaunts covered 39, 53, 54 and 66 yards, and he kicked a 25-yard field goal in the second quarter to put Roosevelt ahead for good.

Forfeits: Keeping alive the Rochester City School District's rich tradition of being lousy when it comes to details, Franklin High has forfeited victories over Marshall and East from the first three weeks of the season, the Democrat and Chronicle reported.

Franklin officials notified Section 5 last week that they had been using a fifth-year high school student.

I do not have a way to verify this, but it's a good bet that RCSD schools have been responsible for more forfeited contests over the last 25 years than all of the 100 other Section 5 schools combined. It's no wonder the district has a horrendous graduation rate if they cannot even figure out which grade their students are in.
