Sunday, Sept. 18, 2011: Recapping Saturday's football action

Leading off today: Sophomore linebacker Matt Perry intercepted four passes -- returning two for scores -- on Saturday as Attica defeated Holley 44-11 in football action.

Perry's returns of 18 and 34 yards staked Attica to a 13-0 lead. He finished the game with eight tackles.

His effort was one of several big-stat days posted by Section 5 players:

    • Pittsford senior Dominic DeLucia continued his hot start with 26 carries for 301 yards and a TD in Pittsford's 45-17 win vs. Fairport. Panthers QB Grant Heyman went 16-for-21 for 242 yards and four TDs.

    • Brockport's Tom Sydeski completed 14 of 20 passes for 310 yards and three TDs and ran for another score in a 36-26 win over Spencerport on a game in which neither team punted.

    • Elba/Byron-Bergen junior Zack Dubois rushed 22 times for 296 yards and TDs covering 5, 3, 2, 53, 48 and 57 yards to beat Pembroke 46-20.

    • Jon Ridler ran 15 times for 296 yards and two touchdowns for Geneseo in a 42-14 win over Bolivar-Richburg.

Boston College recruit hurt: Senior running back Akeel Lynch was having a monster game before injuring an ankle and missing the second half of St. Francis' 34-20 loss to Aquinas, the top-ranked Class A team in the state.

Aquinas QB Cory Benedetto was 10 of 15 for 260 yards and four touchdowns, Taylor Byrne caught seven passes for 191 yards and three TDs, and junior Billy Lombardi ran 21 times for 201 yards in a game the Little Irish led 14-13 at the half.

Lynch, who has committed to play for Boston College next fall, ran 17 times for 239 yards and scored on scampers of 47 and 77 yards. St. Francis coach Jerry Smith told The Buffalo News that Lynch may have suffered a high ankle sprain when a lineman fell on him.

Aquinas extended its winning streak to 22 games against Monsignor Martin Association teams. St. Francis is ranked eighth in Class AA.

MMA showdown: St. Joe's sophomore Nigel Davis opened the game with an 85-yard kickoff return to spark a 34-20 win over Canisius. St. Joe's is ranked 16th and Canisius 22nd in Class AA.

Clemson recruit Chad Kelly was 8-for-14 for 91 yards and two TDs through the air. He also ran 11 times for 91 yards and two scores for the Marauders.

St. Joe's leads the Monsignor Martin Association series 46-30-3. "Joe Wolf was our athletic director for 50 years or something like that, and he was there when I played, and he always said that if you go 0-10 and you win this game, it's a successful season," second-year coach Dennis Gilbert said.

MMA showdown: No. 20 Longwood won at No. 13 William Floyd for the first time, posting a 14-12 victory in a clash of state-ranked Class AA teams from Suffolk County.

“It’s better than a playoff win,” cornerback Dave Bennett told the North Shore Sun after intercepting two passes. “This is a championship game right here.”

The Lions smothered star tailback Stacey Bedell (13 carries, 67 yards) and held QB A.J. Otranto to 6-for-23 accuracy for 99 yards, one TD and two interceptions.

An all-around effort: Tanner Williams found four different ways to the end zone as Hoosick Falls defeated Mechanicville 53-7. Williams scored on a 19-yard reception in the second quarter, a 58-yard run and a 51-yard punt return in the third quarter and a 47-yard interception return in the fourth.

Shootout of the day: Whitehall beat Warrensburg 58-44 as Josh Hoagland rushed 27 times for 307 yards and four touchdowns and threw for a score. Hoagland scored on runs of 11, 34 and 94 yards to break a 30-30 halftime tie.

Warrensburg may have set some sort of record by having three 100-yard rushers in a loss: Lucas Nelson (166), Matt Boodman (149) and Jeremy Barber (106).

Edison escapes: Elmira Heights Edison, ranked 19th in Class D, rallied from a 14-0 deficit and went three overtimes to beat Spencer-Van Etten 26-20. Quarterback Jared Cosgrove scored on a 6-yard TD run in the

third overtime.

S-VE scored on its first overtime on Gino Leonardi's 7-yard run, but Jacob Bahantka responded with a 9-yard score.

Still rolling along: Fort Hamilton ran its PSAL regular-season winning streak to 34 games by downing Campus Magnet 30-21. Travon Reid Segure blocked a field goal to preserve a 24-21 lead, and Stefon Hayles assured the outcome with a 30-yard rushing TD.

More massive efforts: Cheektowaga JFK's Ryan Ball scored four rushing TDs, made seven tackles, forced a fumble, recovered a fumble and intercepted a pass. It added up to a 41-8 win over Buffalo Lafayette.

Jordan Williams had 267 yards in receptions on six catches and three TDs as Timon/St. Jude beat Lancaster St. Mary's 41-14. QB Ryan Dougherty was 12-for-21 for 321 yards and four TDs.

Corning senior QB Brandon Griffin ran 13 times for 204 yards to beat Vestal 45-14 and has 559 yards and seven touchdowns in three games.

Utica Notre Dame downed Adirondack 45-18 as Colin Husler ran for 224 yards and scored five touchdowns. Husler has 11 touchdowns through three games this fall.
