Saturday, Sept. 17, 2011: Recapping Friday's New York football action

Leading off today: Senior Brent Robbins score touchdowns on runs of 54, 52, 31 and 10 yards as No. 2 Randolph defeated No. 3 Silver Creek 40-21 on Friday in a battle of highly regarded Section 6 Class D football team.

Randolph, the 2009 New York State Public High School Athletic Association Class D champion, also got 122 yards and two TDs through the air from QB John Morgante.

"They didn't know how to stop the option — all my touchdowns were on them I think," Robbins told The Buffalo News after rushing 19 times for 197 yards. "It was the line blocking well. They just didn't know what to do on (the option) so we could beat them on that."

Randolph built a 28-21 halftime lead thanks to a 28-point second quarter and then consumed the opening 8:37 of the third quarter to drive to a Morgante 14-yard scoring pass to George Pitchford.

Let's see some D: I'm as guilty as anyone when it comes to glorifying potent offenses and forgetting to show some love for defenders. That stops now with shout outs for a couple of stellar efforts.

Westhampton linebacker Brian Culhane made 11 tackles and recovered three fumbles -- returning two for TDs -- in a 38-12 win over Rocky Point. Culhane's 36-yard return in the second quarter opened up a 20-0 lead, and he brought back another fumble 58 yards in the third quarter.

In upstate action, Rayshan-Shakur Clark returned two fumbles 52 and 85 yards for touchdowns and then caught a 91-yard touchdown pass as Indian River blanked Cortland 48-0.

Another close call: Is there any team living closer to the edge that Columbia? The Blue Devils lost their opener to Shaker 32-28, edged Niskayuna 12-6 in Weeks 2 and then outlasted LaSalle 57-52 on Friday.

That adds up to a 2-1 record and 148 minutes of anxiety-laced action. Columbia's either going to be battle-tested for the postseason or too emotionally drained to stick around very long.

Chris Smith ran for 272 yards and four touchdowns vs. LaSalle. His fourth TD, on a 23-yard run with :50 to go, put the game out of reach; La Salle tacked on a late TD to make it 57-52. Senior QB John Stanley threw for two TDs and ran for two more in the win.

The Cadets fell to 1-2 despite an offense that is averaging more than 47 points a game.

More pinball numbers: Long Island Lutheran lost to Connecticut foe Hamden Hall 49-43 in the Fairchester Conference despite 482 yards. Tiquan Garner (19 carries) and Brandon Alford (12) ran for 219 and 179 yards respectively.

Middletown outslugged Warwick 56-49 as Justin Bynum scored three first-half touchdowns and the Bears scored four more TDs in the fourth quarter.

M-W rallies: Monroe-Woodbury, ranked 19th in Class AA by the New York State Sportswriters Association, rallied from two scores down to beat host Binghamton 14-13. QB Ryan Spelman ran 36 times for 181 yards and a TD, and Paul Adams blocked a Binghamton extra-point attempt in the second quarter.

Binghamton junior Andre Yevchinecz went 20-for-29 for 279 yards but the Patriots turned the ball over five times, including twice in a 51-span of the third quarter to set up the M-W rally.

Spelman scored on a 3-yard run four plays after a fumble recovery, and the Crusaders recovered another fumble two plays after the ensuing kickoff. Spelman ran 27 yards on first down and Tony Patrgnelli went the final five on the next snap.

Not so fortunate: Though Monroe-Woodbury rallied, other ranked teams were not so fortunate in Week 3 of the New York football season:

    • North Rockland edged Class AA No. 21 White Plains 19-15. Nick Connell (11 carries for 59 second-half yards) did most of the work on the 59-yard drive midway through the fourth quarter for the final margin after White Plains had pulled ahead.

    • Bethpage beat Class A No. 7 Lawrence 38-19 in Section 8 action by opening with scores on its first three possessions. The Eagles set the tone on their first drive, holding the ball 8:22 before Justin Rohr scored on a 14-yard run.

    • Cheektowaga fell behind by two TDs before roaring past Class B No. 4 Lackawanna 35-18. Corey Dewald through two TD passes to Dante Burnett (5 catches, 86 yards), and the defense forced five turnovers.

    • Wayne downed Class B No. 8 Geneva 35-21 after falling behind 14-0. Connor Hollenbeck completed 12 of 18 passes for 190 yards and three touchdowns to increase his season totals to 661 yards and 10 scores through the air.

Wayne's Cory McNamara made his third pick of the season, giving him 15 interceptions in two years.

    • Newark Valley junior Mason Shutts threw a TD pass and ran for another to hand Class C No. 11 Lansing its first loss. 14-8.

Double trouble: Sachem North brothers Dalton and Trent Crossan combined for 365 rushing yards and six TDs during a 42-25 victory over Northport. Dalton Crossan rushed 22 times for a career-high 210 yards and four TDs and having lit up Northport for 170 and 4 in the 2010 Section 11 playoffs.

Sophomore QB Trent Crossan ran 18 times for 155 yards and the other two TDs.

“They kept feeding me and feeding me and eventually I broke some long runs,” Dalton Crossan, who has eight touchdowns in two games, told Patch.com, “and the offensive line blocked amazingly.”

More monster efforts: Junior Tyler Rouse scored three Baldwinsville TDs in the first quarter of a 41-28 win over Liverpool, finishing his night with 27 carries foe 291 yards and five scores. His first score was a 40-yard punt return just 2:55 into the contest.

    • Waverly's Zack Cooney led a 55-0 win over Dryden with 8-for-13 passing for 317 yards and six TDs. For good measure, he intercepted a pass and returned it 60 yards for one of the Wolverines' two defensive TDs. Cooney threw for 274 yards and five TDs in the first half.

    • Buffalo South Park 40 sophomore Maurice Howie went 16-for-25 for 318 yards and five total touchdowns to dominate Leiston-Porter 40-7.

    • Honeoye Falls-Lima senior Dylan Swetman was 5-for-7 for 201 yards and three TDs and also rushed three times for 121 yards and one touchdown as the Coguars rolled past Penfield 47-19. Jake Obenhofer's two catches went for 154 yards and two scores.

    • Parker Howard of Arlington, getting plenty of early-season carries while Alex Cunningham recovers from an injury, ran 29 times for 317 yards and scored four TDs to beat Yorktown 28-12.

St. A's opens impressively: CHSFL power St. Anthony's extended its winning streak to 20 games with a 41-26 win over Monsignor Farrell in the Friars' opener, but it may have come at a price.

Running back Dariyan Riley (six carries, 105 yards) broke free for a 50-yard TD in the second quarter, but that was he last carry. He left shortly afterward and was seen on crutches with his left foot heavily taped.

St. Anthony's was already without injured QB Sean McDonagh.

Breaking into the win column: Johnstown, winless in the past two seasons, rallied past Hudson Falls for a 22-20 victory that snapped a 18-game losing streak. Coach Matt Benton's Sir Bills last won in their 2008 finale vs. Cairo-Durham, and Johnstown hadn't posted a win in the series since 1995.

Extra points: Schalmont rolled past Broadalbin-Perth 60-13 for its 21st straight win in Section 2 competition.

Southwestern beat Olean 24-7 and hasn't lost during the regular season since Oct. 12, 2007.

University at Buffalo recruit Marcus McGill, who already had three kickoff returns for scores this month, returned a punt 77 yards for a score as Gates Chili beat Churchville-Chili 42-14. McGill had an interception return for a TD negated by a penalty.
