Leading off today: Senior Brent Robbins score touchdowns on runs of 54, 52, 31 and 10 yards as
No. 2 Randolph defeated No. 3 Silver Creek 40-21 on Friday in a battle of highly regarded Section 6 Class D football team.
Randolph, the 2009 New York State Public High School Athletic Association Class D champion, also got 122 yards and two TDs through the air from QB John Morgante.
"They didn't know how to stop the option — all my touchdowns were on them I think," Robbins told The Buffalo News after rushing 19 times for 197 yards. "It was the line blocking well. They just didn't know what to do on (the option) so we could beat them on that."
Randolph built a 28-21 halftime lead thanks to a 28-point second quarter and then consumed the opening 8:37 of the third quarter to drive to a Morgante 14-yard scoring pass to George Pitchford.
Let's see some D: I'm as guilty as anyone when it comes to glorifying potent offenses and forgetting to show some love for defenders. That stops now with shout outs for a couple of stellar efforts.
Westhampton linebacker Brian Culhane made 11 tackles and recovered three fumbles -- returning two for TDs -- in a 38-12 win over Rocky Point. Culhane's 36-yard return in the second quarter opened up a 20-0 lead, and he brought back another fumble 58 yards in the third quarter.
In upstate action, Rayshan-Shakur Clark returned two fumbles 52 and 85 yards for touchdowns and then caught a 91-yard touchdown pass as Indian River blanked Cortland 48-0.
Another close call: Is there any team living closer to the edge that Columbia? The Blue Devils lost their opener to Shaker 32-28, edged Niskayuna 12-6 in Weeks 2 and then outlasted LaSalle 57-52 on Friday.
That adds up to a 2-1 record and 148 minutes of anxiety-laced action. Columbia's either going to be battle-tested for the postseason or too emotionally drained to stick around very long.
Chris Smith ran for 272 yards and four touchdowns vs. LaSalle. His fourth TD, on a 23-yard run with :50 to go, put the game out of reach; La Salle tacked on a late TD to make it 57-52. Senior QB John Stanley threw for two TDs and ran for two more in the win.
The Cadets fell to 1-2 despite an offense that is averaging more than 47 points a game.
More pinball numbers: Long Island Lutheran lost to Connecticut foe Hamden Hall 49-43 in the Fairchester Conference despite 482 yards. Tiquan Garner (19 carries) and Brandon Alford (12) ran for 219 and 179 yards respectively.
Middletown outslugged Warwick 56-49 as Justin Bynum scored three first-half touchdowns and the Bears scored four more TDs in the fourth quarter.
M-W rallies: Monroe-Woodbury, ranked 19th in Class AA by the New York State Sportswriters Association, rallied from two scores down to beat host Binghamton 14-13. QB Ryan Spelman ran 36 times for 181 yards and a TD, and Paul Adams blocked a Binghamton extra-point attempt in the second quarter.
Binghamton junior Andre Yevchinecz went 20-for-29 for 279 yards but the Patriots turned the ball over five times, including twice in a 51-span of the third quarter to set up the M-W rally.
Spelman scored on a 3-yard run four plays after a fumble recovery, and the Crusaders recovered another fumble two plays after the ensuing kickoff. Spelman ran 27 yards on first down and Tony Patrgnelli went the final five on the next snap.
Not so fortunate: Though Monroe-Woodbury rallied, other ranked teams were not so fortunate in Week 3 of the New York football season:
• North Rockland edged Class AA No. 21 White Plains 19-15. Nick Connell (11 carries for 59 second-half yards) did most of the work on the 59-yard drive midway through the fourth quarter for the final margin after White Plains had pulled ahead.
• Bethpage beat Class A No. 7 Lawrence 38-19 in Section 8 action by opening with scores on its first three possessions. The Eagles set the tone on their first drive, holding the ball 8:22 before Justin Rohr scored on a 14-yard run.
• Cheektowaga fell behind by two TDs before roaring past Class B No. 4 Lackawanna 35-18. Corey Dewald through two TD passes to Dante Burnett (5 catches, 86 yards), and the defense forced five turnovers.
• Wayne downed Class B No. 8 Geneva 35-21 after falling behind 14-0. Connor Hollenbeck completed 12 of 18 passes for 190 yards and three touchdowns to increase his season totals to 661 yards and 10 scores through the air.
