Sunday, Sept. 11, 2011: Recapping Saturday's football action

Leading off today: Xaverian rallied from two scored down and defeated Monroe-Woodbury 32-21 on Saturday in Middletown, handing the Crusaders their first regular-season football loss since 2003.

Junior Zach Kearney, making his first start, accounted for 277 yards of total offense, threw three touchdown passes and ran for another. Laray Smith ran for 125 yards for the Clippers, who rattled off 32 straight points after falling behind 14-0 after a pair of turnovers.

Monroe-Woodbury QB Ryan Spelman scored on runs of 42, 3 and 2 yards. The Crusaders last regular-season loss was by 21-20 to Newburgh Free Academy on Oct. 3, 2003.

In other action from the tripleheader, Pine Bush edged Xavier 17-14 on John Thorn's 31-yard field goal with 6.1 seconds to play.

MMA scores sweep on the road: Three Monsignor Martin Association teams brought home victories against downstate CHSFL competition, with St. Joe's downing Monsignor Farrell 47-32 on the strength of five Chad Kelly TD passes to outduel Paul Quadrato (17 of 29, 230 yards, three TDs). Kelly threw for 257 yards on 15-of-22 accuracy and also gained 77 yards in 10 carries.

St. Joe's sophomore Nigel Davis scored in the first half on an 83-yard carry and a 76-yard interception return.

St. Francis rolled past Holy Trinity 50-26 loss as Akeel Lynch ran for 249 yards and two touchdowns, and Timon-St. Jude posted a 42-7 triumph over St. John the Baptist as Alex DiMillo ran 11 times for 202 yards and scored twice.

What a start: Senior Stacey Bedell rushed seven times for 265 yards and TDs covering 21, 74, 12, 52, and 51 yards in the first half as William Floyd kicked off its season with a 41-7 win over Lindenhurst. Bedell also picked off a pass and made six tackles.

Speaking over insane starts on Long Island, Luke Spitzer had 172 all-purpose yards and three TDs in the first quarter to pace Lynbrook past Glen Cove 38-20. Spitzer (five carries, 128 yards) scored on rushes of 50 and 44 yards and a 56-yard punt return in the first 12 minutes.

Brother acts: Tyler Fredericks (eight carries, 119 yards) opened the scoring with a 50-yard run on the opening possession and his brother Ryan tacked on 170 rushing yards and four touchdowns in the middle two quarters as Lawrence defeated Manhasset 35-0.

Lawrence piled up 492 yards of offense and limited Manhasset to one first down, coming on the final possession of the contest.

Meanwhile, defending New York State Public High School Athletic Association Class AA champ Rush-Henrietta beat Fairport 48-28 as Christian Harris scored three first-quarter TDs on runs of 14, 44 and 80 yards and Chancellor Harris scored on a run and a reception.

Christian Harris carried 11 times for 196 yards a week after scoring four times against Webster Schroeder. The Royal Comets ran for 403 yards and got 91 through the air.

Slow out of the gate: Christian Conway scored on a 13-yard rush and ran in the two-point conversion with 3:00 left as Bronxville opened defense of its NYSPHSAA Class C championship with a 15-14 win at Dobbs Ferry.

Bronxville trailed 14-0 until Conway's 5-yard TD run with 9:38 left.

Slugfests: In Section 2, LaSalle and Queensbury combined for a minimum of 20 points in each quarter, with LaSalle eventually prevailing 58-48. Cadets QB Garrett

Delory went 9-for-14 for 175 yards and two TDs, and Marc Carroll ran four times for 120 yards with TD runs of 34 and 69 yards. Carroll also returned an interception 39 yards for a score.

Queensbury’s Tyler Reynolds was 12-for-18 for 175 yards and four touchdowns, with Nick Ketter making six grabs for 128 yards and scoring four TDs -- one coming on a 64-yard TD run.

Quarterback Sean Marcano ran 12 times for 171 yards and three touchdowns as Cardinal Spellman edged St. Dominic 40-38 in overtime. Marcano's 60-yard carry on a fourth-and-12 snap and Germain Ngaba conversion run sent the game to OT, where, Ngaba (13 carries, 138 yards and three TDs) scored on a 10-yard rush and again made the conversion.

Riverhead beat East Islip 38-25 on QB Ryan Bitzer's Bitzer's 2-yard TD sneak with 1:40 remaining. Bitzer went 26-for-39 with four TDs and a school-record 395 yards through the air. Joe Modica's 45-yard TD catch midway through the fourth quarter had completed East Islip's rally from a 32-14 deficit.

More OT drama: Travis Samuels threw a 13-yard TD pass to Marco Cavaliere in the second overtime as Clarkstown North fought off North Rockland 17-10. Billy DeLay made a sack and a tackle on the last two plays of North Rockland's ensuing possession to wrap up the game.

In the first OT, Paul Prendergast and Cavaliere matched field goals of 36 and 22 yards, respectively.

The victory was Clarkstown North’s second straight over North Rockland after 31 years of futility.

Plan B: Herkimer can attest to the fact that you can never have too many quarterbacks.    Magicians senior Sean Crandall went to the sideline with leg cramps after carrying 18 times for 170 yards and two TDs. In came backup QB Mike Dobek, with a trick or two up his sleeve.

Working with the score tied at 20-20, Dobek pitched to Austin Mills. The sophomore's halfback option toss to Gio Aceto on a third-and-19 play went 52 yards for a score, and Dobek ran back an interception 45 yards for another score 1:01 later as Herkimer beat Utica Notre Dame 48-33.

Notre Dame senior Colin Hulser scored four TDs, including an 86-yard kickoff return after one of Crandall's scores.
