John Moriello's NYSSWA blog
Tuesday, March 8, 2011: Catching up on weekend action, part III
Leading off today: Let's take a lap around last weekend's NYSPHSAA boys basketball sectional action with a look at a notable development in each of the classes:

Boys Class AA: Mount Vernon. Again.

Every year, you know Mount Vernon is going to be a contender. But you also look at the likes of New Rochelle and one or two programs that battle their way toward the top, and you wonder, "Is this the year ..."

Mount Vernon's current run of Section 1 championships stands at six following a 64-58 victory against Poughkeepsie. And Jabarie Hinds' personal streak stands at five -- the last four finals came vs. the Pioneers -- as he prepares to head off to West Virginia University in the fall.

Seniors Jamell Walker and Damani Ashton each scored 15 points, and Walker grabbed 10 rebounds to earn MVP honors. Hinds missed most of the first half with foul trouble and finished with nine points and seven rebounds.

"We've talked about that often this season, about the four gold balls and his legendary status," coach Bob Cimmino told The Journal News. "The thing about him is, yeah, he likes it, but he doesn't really care about it that much. He just wants to go after Newburgh now."

   Boys Class A: Jamesville-DeWitt. Again.

The Red Rams are three-time defending NYSPHSAA champions and have a post player in Dajuan Coleman who is regarded by everyone as one of the top three juniors in the country.

But Cortland made us all look twice earlier this season by toppling J-D 55-51 shortly after the Red Rams returned home from back-to-back losses in West Virginia.

There would be no repeat in the Section 3 final. Coleman scored 22 of his 26 points after halftime -- including 16 in the fourth quarter -- and J-D earned a 75-55 victory for its fourth straight sectional title.

“I told myself I had to take the game over,” Coleman told The Post-Standard. “I’m a leader on this team and it was time to step up.”

Boys Class B: We're still on track for a Potsdam vs. Burke Catholic final on March 19.

I'm in the majority that doesn't think Potsdam can win that game. But that's why we play games on wood floors rather than on paper.

Unbeaten Potsdam defeated Ogdensburg Free Academy 47-30 for the Section 10 championship; Zach Rufer scored 11 of his team's first 22 points and Burke won Section 9 by a 73-46 count over Ellenville in the championship game a year after falling one win short of

    the NYSPHSAA crown.

"This is not where we want to be," Rufer told The Times Herald-Record. "This is just a step.

Boys Class C: Long name, short trip to the top of the podium?

I wish picking stocks to buy was this simple. International Prep at Grover Cleveland was eighth in our rankings at the end of January. But the more I looked at results for the teams ahead of them, the less I liked any of the seven.

I wish I'd bought shares in I-Prep when they were the figurative penny stock as merely the Section 6 favorite, because they're looking like a Fortune 500 company these days.

The Presidents won sectionals with a 65-53 victory over Tapestry Charter and former Grover Cleveland coach Earl Schunk. Chris Holland scored 21 points and Kadeem Hillman added 19 for rookie coach Shaun Ryan.

It was the second victory for I-Prep over Tapestry this season and gave Grover Cleveland its first Section 6 championship since 2004.

Boys Class D: How much do you want it?

Three small-school finals from around the state went to overtime, two others were decided by six points or less and there are two more games to be played to finalize the bracket.

No, the quality of small school ball is generally no match for the size and speed of players in the Class AA tournament. But no one brings a more passionate and loyal crows to the gym than the little guys.

C.G. Finney in Section 5 and New York Mills in Section 3 began the season ranked first and second, respectively. The order has since reversed, but they're still the favorites to meet in the final.
