Sunday, April 25, 2010: Warwick 3,200 relay triumphs at Penn Relays
Leading off today: The Warwick boys 3,200-meter relay ran the fastest high school time in the country this season by posting a 7:41.77 clocking at the Penn Relays in Philadelphia yesterday.

The Championship of America-winning quartet at Franklin Field consisted of Pierre Armand, Dan Ramirez, Dan Paez and Tim Luthin, who all clocked times between 1:55.1 and 1:55.8 to fend off Jamaica's Kingston College (7:43.50) and a Georgetown Prep (7:43.76) effort highlighted by Joseph Woiwode’s 1:51.4 anchor.

Warwick had qualified on Friday with a time of 7:46.02.

New York's other highlights yesterday were vertical in nature. Arlington junior Jordan Yamouh won the pole vault in 15-5, and Paul Robeson junior Oneil Sandiford pulled a mild upset to win the high jump in 6-11½.

On Friday, Jamaican prodigy Kemoy Campbell (8:20.14) fought off Wisconsin-bound Fayetteville-Manlius senior Alex Hatz (8:21.01) to win the 3,000 meters. Hatz's time is No. 4 on the all-time New York list.

On Thursday, Villanova recruit Emily Lipari of Roslyn ran down Cornwall junior Aisling Cuffe to win the girls' 3,000 meters in 9:34.52. Cuffe was clocked in 9:36.84.

The Benjamin Cardozo girls 1,600 relay ran a national season-best 3:41.62 to qualify first for Friday's Championship of America race, where they placed third in 3:42.27. Cardozo's 400 relay was sixth in the final in :46.25 after qualifying Thursday in a gaudy :46.87 sans blocks.

North Babylon senior Vanessa Stewart won the shot put in ease with a throw of 47-5.25.

Tough loss for West Genny: West Genesee dropped a 14-13 verdict to Olney, Md., Good Counsel in the final of the Wildcats' girls lacrosse tournament in Camillus yesterday. Brown University recruit Bre Hudgins' fourth goal of the day pulled West Genesee into a tie with :29.4 to go, but the Falcons' Shannon Lechner (a Towson State recruit) fired home the winner with :11.2 left in regulation.

West Genesee held a 7-6 lead at the half, but Good Counsel went on a 6-2 run in the first 11:30 of the second half.

Boys lacrosse highlights: Kevin Interlicchio's hat trick sparked Yorktown to an 11-9 upset of Chaminade, ranked third in Class A by the New York State Sportswriters Association. Interlicchio also recorded an assist for the Cornhuskers, and Remy Lieberman had two goals and an assist.

Senior Jake Bratek scored five goals and Eric DeJohn added four as Jamesville-DeWitt, ranked No. 3 in Class B earned a 13-11 win over Class A No. 7 Fairport. In the second game of the Coaches vs. Cancer showdown, featuring Section 3 Class C contenders, No. 7 Skaneateles steamrolled No. 2 LaFayette 15-3 as junior attackman Kevin Rice posted six goals and two assists.

Will O'Donnell and Jake Weil scored twice apiece for John Jay Cross River (7-1), ranked seventh in Class B, in a 6-5 win in OT over Class C No. 4 Corning East. Corning East, which plays Class A No. 4 Ithaca on Tuesday, had rallied from two goals down in the fourth quarter.

Milestone alert: Shoreham-Wading River baseball coach Sal Mignano registered his 500th win with a 10-3 victory over Sayville.    "It's a nice feeling," he told Newsday after improving to 500-291 in 34 seasons. "It makes me realize how long I have done this. It's a special feeling to achieve

something that only two other coaches in Suffolk have done. It's even better to do it all at one place."

Mignano won a NYSPHSAA championship with S-WR in 1987 and has six sectional titles on his resume.

Pleasantville girls lacrosse player Lindsay Gilfeather scored five goals Friday in a 17-7 win over Greeley, pushing here career total to 150. A day earlier, Haley Dumke reached 100 career goals with a hat trick as Edgemont topped White Plains, 9-6.

Aviles is dazzling: Suffern pitcher Robbie Aviles turned in his second straight no-hitter on Thursday, fanning 15 North Rockland batters during a 3-0 victory, MaxPreps.com reported.

Aviles, who has 34 strikeouts in 20 innings and has yet to allow a run, is scheduled to pitch against Clarkstown South on Wednesday.

Wild L.I. twist: Southampton beat John Glenn in the completion of a suspended game and then their scheduled game on Friday -- minus coach Ike Birdsall and two assistants following their ejections Tuesday.

Ricky Wesnofske singled with two outs in the bottom of the eighth inning and scored on a botched pickoff and two throwing errors to cap a rally from a 5-1 deficit and post a 6-5 win in the suspended game. Collin Buoniello struck out six in 6 2/3 innings of scoreless relief.

In the regularly scheduled game, Southampton won 5-4 and freshman Alexander Soyars delivered a two-run single with two outs in the bottom of the sixth and then Neil D'Acierno drew a bases-loaded walk.

JV coach John Loren was at the helm for Southampton following Tuesday's game was suspended in the first inning because of what Section 11 Executive Director Ed Cinelli categorized as safety issues. According to a Newsday account, Birdsall is alleged to have made contact with plate umpire Frank Musumeci; Bidsall, the two assistants and three players were ejected.

Both the school and the section were reported to be investigating the actions of Birdsall, who will remain sidelined pending the outcome.

Birdsall's comments to the newspaper implied that the problem may have begun with Musumeci squeezing the strike zone on a Southampton player as retribution for a comment made in a newspaper story last spring. There was no indication that Section 11 was investigating that possibility.
