Sunday, March 7, 2010: New Hartford ousts No. 1 Webster Thomas in 3 OTs
Leading off today: Junior Alex Fukes connected for a goal 4:36 into the third overtime period gave New Hartford a 5-4 victory yesterday in the NYSPHSAA Division II boys hockey quarterfinals over Webster, the top-ranked team in the state.

Fukes shot beat Thomas goalie Joe DiRose (39 saves), who forced OT by making the stop on a penalty shot by Clayton Whittemore, a 45-goal scorer, with :15 remaining in the third period. New Hartford defeated Thomas 3-1 in the 2009 quarterfinals en route to a New York State Public High School Athletic Association crown.

"That was pretty much the state finals right there," Thomas senior forward Mike Iulianello told the Democrat and Chronicle after the game came to a conclusion in the 65th minute. "They're a great team."

An exchange of power-play goals left New Hartford ahead 4-3 in the third, then Matt Casilio of Thomas connected on a short-handed breakaway goal with 5:30 to play.

In other Division II action, Queensbury KO'd second-ranked Rye 5-3 to reach the final four in Utica for the third time in four years. Kevin Valenti scored twice and Dylan Hafner made 17 saves while Queensbury chalked up a 50-20 advantage in shots.

The teams had split a pair of regular-season meetings.

Division I hockey: Kevin Norwin scored on a blast from the point into a crowd with 16 seconds to go in the first overtime period to carry Suffern to a 3-2 triumph against Williamsville North in quarterfinal action to trigger a huge celebration in the friendly confines of the Sport-O-Rama rink.

"It gave me so much joy," Norwin told The Journal News after Suffern (22-1) recovered from only its second deficit of the whole season. "There was a little sadness, too, knowing it was going to be my last game here. But knowing we're going to be playing in the state final four, there is just no better feeling."

Down 2-1 late in regulation, Norwin got the puck on net and John Redgate cashed in the rebound with :49 to go.

Next up for the Mounties is unbeaten and top-ranked West Genesee in Utica. The Wildcats (23-0) advanced by means of a 3-1 win against Potsdam at Shove Park in Camillus.

Adam King's second goal of the game, a power play midway through the second period, broke a tie, and then Erich Haney made it 3-1 just 22 seconds later.

CHSAA hockey: Paul Steinig and Sean McHugh scored second-period goals for Canisius in a 2-1 victory over St. Anthony's in White Plains. Dylan Arnold made 15 saves for the Crusaders, who outshot St. A's 30-16.

It was Canisius' second straight CHSAA championship.

"It was one of our most complete games all year," Canisius coach Terry Miller old The Buffalo News. "It's nice to be able to go back to back. It's never been done (by us) before."

Girls indoor track: Villanova-bound senior Emily Lipari of Roslyn took over the national lead in the 1,500 meters, winning in 4:28.21 to highlight the state indoor track meet at Cornell University's Barton Hall.

The effort, including a 31-second kick over the final 200 meters, broke a meet record of 4:29.55 by Nnenna Lynch of Hunter College High in 1989. Lipari has a combined eight Federation titles in cross country and track.

  •    "Even though I've committed to college, I still have some unfinished business in high school, so I'm not taking this year lightly," Lipari told Newsday.

Cornwall's Aisling Cuffe wired the field in the 3,000 in 9:36.95, the nation's No. 2 time this season, and national leader Kelsey Margey of Harborfields snared the 1,000 in 2:51.87.

State record holder Melissa Kurzdorfer of Lancaster threw 48-10.25 to win another shot put crown.

Saratoga senior Madalayne Smith repeated in the 55 meters in :07.11 but was edged at the tape in the 55 hurdles by three one-thousandths by Lateisha Philson of Cardozo :07.95.

Boys indoor track: Alex Hatz's comeback from surgery in August remains on pace. The Fayetteville-Manlius senior scored a huge distance double -- 4:20.07 and 9:23.29 -- at Cornell to highlight the boys indoor track championships.

Hatz, a Wisconsin recruit, held off Otis Ubriaco of Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake by 1.72 seconds in the 3,200.

In the long jump, Anthony DeJean of Rome Free Academy fouled three times, but his final effort (23-9) edged Berfrantz Charles of North Babylon, who had gone 23-8.5 on his fifth jump. Also on the infield, Cory Duggan of Monsignor Farrell won the pole vault by clearing 16 feet.

In the triple jump, Gabe Pickett of Vestal won with a leap of 47-6.50, but the third place-finisher was a reminder of past great feats. Olukayoda Owolabi of Midwood, cousin of former national record holder Sanya Owolabi (Sleepy Hollow, 53-4.25 in 1978) took third.

The 55 hurdles final was a photo finish, with Richmond Ahadzi of Sheepshead Bay getting the nod over Sancho Barrett of Amityville in :07.48.

Bowling: Appearing in its third straight NYSPHSAA bowling championships, North Rockland earned Section 1's first title by piling up 6,314 pins at Mardi-Bob Lanes in Poughkeepsie. They trailed Greece Athena (which finished third behind Colonie), by 13 pins entering the final game.

Robert Borovec (228) and Jason Novak (225) paved the way in the final game.

"I love my boys," coach Don Laspina told The Journal News. "They overcame adversity. Coming down to the last game, they had the heart and put it together and took it. It's a great accomplishment for them and for me. I get the gratification and satisfaction of knowing that the team put it together, survived, and came out on top."

The North Rockland girls, with four eighth-graders, placed third in the team competition for the second season in a row. Colonie won its first championship since 2005, with Middle Country earning second place.

The individual championships are being held today.

More later: I'll be back tonight to wrap up a few highlights from a busy championship Saturday in basketball.
