Tuesday, March 2, 2010: Potsdam skaters prevail in triple overtime
Leading off today: Taylor Hazen's goal 2:25 into the third overtime lifted Potsdam over Massena 2-1 in the Section 10 Division I hockey championship last night at Clarkson University.

Massena was on the verge of defeat when Sandstoners defenseman Ryan Merriman flicked a 90-foot wrist shot that eluded Raiders goalie Nathan Lint (37 saves) with 1:41 left in regulation to tie the game.

In the third OT, Hazen took a pass from Seth Adams from behind the net and knocked home the game-winner, his seventh goal of the season, against the two-time defending sectional champs.

"We shook the jitters off after the first period and played really great the rest of the game," Potsdam coach Al Benda told The Watertown Daily Times. "The guys had no quit in them."

Goalie Evan Drummatter made 27 saves to advance Potsdam (14-7-1) to the New York State Public High School Athletic Association quarterfinals against top-ranked West Genesee (22-0), which won their regular-season meeting 5-1 on Dec. 19. "We have nothing to lose, they're the best in the state, we're looking forward to the challenge," Benda said.

In the Division II final, St. Lawrence defeated Ogdensburg Free Academy 5-3 on the strength of four third-period goals. It was the Larries' first championship since 1984.

One's done, one's still alive: Section 5's two defending state boys basketball champions were both in action, but only one is returning to a sectional final.

Newark seniors Javon McCrea (20 points) and Ben Holt (17) overwhelmed Bishop Kearney 66-50 in the Section 5

  • Class A-2 semifinals. Newark took control with a 17-0 run late in the first half vs. Kearney, which won the NYSPHSAA Class B championship a year ago.

The Reds (19-1), ranked fourth by the NYSSWA, play Aquinas (15-5) on Saturday in the final. "Aquinas can't beat us if we play like we did today," McCrea told the Democrat and Chronicle.

Meanwhile, Garrett Kesel scored 13 first-half points and James Stanton scored 12 in the second half as defending state Class C champ Avon defeated Campbell-Savona 54-38 in a Section 5 Class C-1 semifinal. Ravaged by graduation and injuries, the Braves are 14-7 and seeded 10th in the tournament.

Avon plays Mynderse, ranked No. 2 in the state, in the sectional final on Friday.

Extra points: The 78th annual Mission Bouts intramural boxing matches will take place at Aquinas Institute in Rochester on Friday at 7 p.m. The school is dedicating the event to legendary fighter Carmen Basilio. Call 585-232-7100 for information about tickets, which are priced at $10 and $15.
