Monday, March 1, 2010: Tappen Zee's Hudson defends gymnastics crown
Leading off today: Tappen Zee senior Jillian Hudson became the first gymnast in Section 1 history to win consecutive all-around titles in the NYSPHSAA gymnastics championships yesterday at Cold Spring Harbor.

Hudson, who placed first in the vault, balance beam and floor exercise, compiled 37.85 points to hold off junior Nicole Radon of Hamburg Frontier (37.35) and lead Section 1 to its fourth team title in five years.

"It was really exciting," Hudson told The Journal News. "It was fun being here with the team and going out with a bang. It was good for my last meet to finish with the team title and a lot of personal victories. I came in here wanting to do my best, and this is how it came out."

Amherst continues to roll: Amherst, making a strong showing after 19 straight losing seasons, earned the Section 6 Division II hochey championship with a 3-2 victory against Sweet Home at HSBC Arena. T.J. Kaszubski had a goal and an assist for the Tigers (12-9-2), who beat the Nos. 1, 2 and 5 seeds in sectionals.

Top seed Williamsville North won its first Division I title since 2005 by blanking Niagara-Wheatfield 2-0. Sophomore Jake Rosen, battling a sinus infection, scored twice in the first period and goalie Parker Gahagen stopped all 21 shots.

Williamsville North has won three state titles (2002, '04, '06) and has been the runner-up four times.

Rye vs. Q'bury again: Rye defeated Yorktown 7-1 in the Section I Division II final at West Point to set up its third game of the season against Queensbury in the NYSPHSAA quarterfinals.

Freshman Michael Benicasa started the rout for the Garnets 7:21 into the game to set up a three-goal opening period. Paul Mundinger made it 2-0 when he popped out from behind the net for a goal with 4:08 left, and Nick Rosenfield scored with :17.6 left in the first period.

Rye defeated Queensbury 5-4 on Nov. 28. Queensbury

In Division I, Suffern dominated upstart Lakeland/Panas 6-1 to set up a state quarterfinal vs. Williamsville North. Willie Backer scored two goals, and Jake Jaeger and Kevin Norwin each had a goal and an assist for the Mounties.

Long wait is over: Pittsford scored three goals in the first 8½ minutes and blew out Gates Chili to earn the Section 5 Division I hockey championship. Two goals by Patrick Scherer and one from co-captain Aaron Witzel started the way to the final 7-0 margin.

It was Pittsford's first sectional championship in 15 years.

"We have 14 seniors and we all knew this was our last chance, so we all just really wanted to win the game," Witzel told the Democrat and Chronicle after finishing with two goals. "You could tell by the way we came out."

Senior goaltender Ryan Haen made 18 saves for the shutout.

Webster Thomas, the state's No. 1 Division II team, tallied three times in the first nine minutes and beat Victor 4-0 for its third straight Section 5 trophy, setting up a quarterfinal vs. New Hartford in the NYSPHSAA tournament next weekend.

Goalie Joe DiRose made 21 saves for his third straight postseason shutout. Tyler Smedley scored 87 seconds into the game and added two assists.
