Jillian Hudson became the first gymnast in Section 1 history to win consecutive all-around titles in the NYSPHSAA gymnastics championships yesterday at Cold Spring Harbor.
Hudson, who placed first in the vault, balance beam and floor exercise, compiled 37.85 points to hold off junior Nicole Radon of Hamburg Frontier (37.35) and lead Section 1 to its fourth team title in five years.
"It was really exciting," Hudson told The Journal News. "It was fun being here with the team and going out with a bang. It was good for my last meet to finish with the team title and a lot of personal victories. I came in here wanting to do my best, and this is how it came out."
Amherst continues to roll: Amherst, making a strong showing after 19 straight losing seasons, earned the Section 6 Division II hochey championship with a 3-2 victory against Sweet Home at HSBC Arena. T.J. Kaszubski had a goal and an assist for the Tigers (12-9-2), who beat the Nos. 1, 2 and 5 seeds in sectionals.
Top seed Williamsville North won its first Division I title since 2005 by blanking Niagara-Wheatfield 2-0. Sophomore Jake Rosen, battling a sinus infection, scored twice in the first period and goalie Parker Gahagen stopped all 21 shots.
Williamsville North has won three state titles (2002, '04, '06) and has been the runner-up four times.
Rye vs. Q'bury again: Rye defeated Yorktown 7-1 in the Section I Division II final at West Point to set up its third game of the season against Queensbury in the NYSPHSAA quarterfinals.
Freshman Michael Benicasa started the rout for the Garnets 7:21 into the game to set up a three-goal opening period. Paul Mundinger made it 2-0 when he popped out from behind the net for a goal with 4:08 left, and Nick Rosenfield scored with :17.6 left in the first period.
