Wednesday, June 5, 2013: Carmel wins completion of suspended softball final

Leading off today: Carmel defeated Ketcham 2-1 in a sectional softball final on Wednesday morning in the completion of a game that was suspended after 10 scoreless innings Tuesday evening.

The game was the much-postponed and then delayed Section 1 Class AA final.

In a case of no rest for the weary, Carmel was scheduled to hop on a bus early Wednesday afternoon for an approximate 2.5-hour ride to play Section 4 champion Union-Endicott in the New York State Public High School Athletic Association quarterfinals at the BAGSAI softball complex at 5 p.m.

“That’s going to be the mental toughness of the day,” Carmel coach Kerri O’Connor told The Journal News on Tuesday. “We can handle it.”

The decision to suspend the game Tuesday was made by Section 1 softball coordinators Susan Dullea and Todd Santabarbara as well as the respective athletic directors.

More Class AA softball: While Carmel is trying to squeeze in the completion of two games in one day, East Meadow took the field Tuesday for the first time in 12 days and defeated Longwood 7-0 in a NYSPHSAA quarterfinal.

The Jets, who hadn't played since the Section 8 final on May 23, scored four runs in the third inning and rode the one-hit pitching of Kerri Shapiro. Shapiro struck out nine, walked none and went 3-for-4 at the plate with a pair of runs batted in.

Class A: First baseman Kristen Bricker (2-for-2, four RBIs) and designated hitter Chrissy Milone (3-for-3, two RBIs) provided the punch as Sayville downed Island Trees 7-5 in the quarterfinals.

Class B: Ashley Camp's two-run double off the left-center wall capped a four-run seventh inning as Windsor rallied past Solvay 4-2 in the NYSPHSAA quarterfinals.

Windsor's semifinal will be against Wayland-Cohocton, a 7-6 winner over Falconer in which pitchers Abby Cortney (Falconer) and Mackenzie Weber (Way-Co) traded three-

    run home runs.

Class C: Haldane committed 10 errors in its first-round game but stuff pulled out a 10-7 victory over Chester to reach the state quarterfinals.

After scoring three runs in the top of the second inning to take a 4-1 lead, Haldane made four errors in the bottom of the inning to allow Chester to tie.

“We are going to try to fix it by ignoring it and forgetting about it because that is not the way we play,” coach Nick Lisikatos told the Poughkeepsie Journal. “We played one or two games with a couple of errors here or there, but collectively we play pretty solid defense. What you saw was youth. The key for tomorrow is to come out and not panic.”

Class D: The last of the NYSPHSAA quarterfinals were both blowouts.

Hamilton battered Heuvelton with a six-run fifth inning and then tacked on eight more runs over the next two innings of 1 14-0 victory. Pitcher Becca Rogers allowed five hits, struck out 12 and went 2-for-5 with a double and four RBIs.

Afton rolled past Livingston Manor 13-0 as Cassidy Phillips threw a one-hitter. Phillips also had three hits at the plate for the Crimson Knights, who plated four runs in the first and led 10-0 after three innings.
