Leading off today: I'm probably in the minority here, but I usually enjoy an old-fashioned, 1-0 baseball game more than a 9-6 or 12-10 shootout. I like the tension of a low-scoring game, where both teams know that one run -- whether in the form of a home run or cobbled together by a walk, stolen base, ground out and sac fly -- could be the difference.
Section 11 had just such a case Monday in its Class AA quarterfinals as Ward Melville edged Longwood 1-0 courtesy of Joe Flynn's fifth-inning home run and six shutout innings by junior Chris Cepeda to set up a semifinal with Half Hollow Hills West.
Part of the reason I mention that game is because it reminded me of Friday's Class B game in Suffolk County in which Center Moriches handed Mattituck a tough-luck, 1-0 loss. James Schaefer scored from third base on a wild pitch in the fifth inning and Patrick Bryant tossed a three-hitter with four strikeouts and no walks.
That in itself makes for a pretty compelling story. What puts it over the top, though, is that Mattituck's Cameron Burt threw a no-hitter threw a no-hitter (he walked five) in the loss.
Making up for lost time: I've been on the writers' version of the disabled list for the last few weeks while battling kidney stones -- a literal and figurative pain of the highest magnitude -- so there are some noteworthy items from the past week to note for the record.
(1) The CHSAA boys basketball divisional alignments for the 2013-14 season shoe All Hallows moving up a notch to Class AA and Monsignor Scanlan making the jump from B to A, where Somers JFK will also land following its exit next month from Section 1 of the NYSPHSAA.
(2) Saniya Chong, headed to UConn after a stellar four-year basketball career at Ossining, has been selected Parade's national girls player of the year. Jon Severe of Christ the King was selected to the magazine's boys All-America team.
(3) It's getting to be that time of the year again, so we've started work on brackets for the upcoming NYSPHSAA tournaments. Dates and sites for the boys lacrosse tournament are posted, with girls lacrosse, baseball and softball to follow shortly.
(4) Clarence softball coach Todd Banaszak hit a milestone with his 300th career victory last week as the Red Devils defeated Olean 8-2. Clarence is 18-2 in the follow-up to a 2012 NYSPHSAA Class AA championship.
Distance ace shelved: Clarence junior Marissa Saenger, a Foot Locker finalist last fall in cross country, is apparently done for the season in track courtesy of a
