Saturday, May 11, 2013: Argyle star Lufkin headed to Hartwick

Leading off today: The Hartwick College men's basketball program has landed one of the most prolific scorers in state history as Joey Lufkin told The Post-Star he will continue his career there next season.

Lufkin, a 5-foot-9 point guard, who helped Argyle to a 24-0 record this winter and its first New York State Public High School Athletic Association boys basketball championship, holds school records for points in a game (54), season and career (2,146). He stands 44th on the state's all-time career scoring list.

Hartwick is a Division III school in the Empire 8 Athletic Conference.

“I like coach Todd McGuinness very much,” Lufkin, the New York State Sportswriters Association Class D player of the year, told the newspaper. “I had a chance to play Division II at a couple schools, but I wanted to stay close by and I wanted to play as much as I could right away.”

Saturday softball: Four of the state's top 20 Class AA teams have advanced to Sunday's final four in the 32nd annual James "Ace" Morabito Memorial Invitational Softball Tournament in Herkimer.

No. 2 Valley Central plays No. 5 Cicero-North Syracuse and No. 6. St. Joseph-by-the-Sea takes on No. 20 Brockport in the semifinals on Sunday at 9 a.m.

Here are the championship-bracket scores from Saturday's action in the 16-team event:

First round
  St. Joseph-by-the-Sea 8, New Hartford 0
  Brockport 2, Colonie 1
  Cicero-North Syracuse 3, Carmel 0
  Valley Central 4, Suffern 0
Buffalo Sacred Heart 12, Mynderse 1
  Clarkstown South 7, Waterloo 1
  Liverpool 20, Monsignor Preston 3
  Suffern 7, Mechanicville 3
Quarterfinals
  St. Joseph/Sea 3, Clarkstown South 1
  Brockport 7, Liverpool 1
  Valley Central 4, Suffern 0
  Cicero-North Syracuse 5, Sacred Heart 1
Monster run: Fayetteville-Manlius senior Nick Ryan broke the Section 3 record en route to winning the boys' 3,200 meters Friday at the Oneida Invitational.

Ryan clocked 8 minutes, 55.93 seconds to win by more than half a lap. He kicked him in 1:02.9 on the bell lap in eclipsing the F-M school and sectional mark of Tommy Gruenewald (8:59.32).

Texas issue: You can take Tim Tebow off the National Football League's New York Jets, but you can't take Tim Tebow out of the world of sports controversies.

The Texas Senate has passed legislation, the so-called the Tim Tebow Bill, that would allow home-schooled students to play sports at their nearby public school. The bill must pass the Texas House by the end of the current session. If approved, it would go into effect next school year.

The connection to the much-discussed quarterback is because Tebow took advantage of a similar rule by playing Nease High School in Ponte Vedra, Fla., while being home-schooled.

By the way, New York is not one of the 27 states currently allowing home-schooled students to participate in high school sports, though the idea has gained momentum in recent years. Parents who home-school their children still pay school taxes, which some say should open the door to participation in public school activities.

Extra points: Tottenville quarterback Brandon Barnes, who led the Pirates to the PSAL championship game at Yankee Stadium last December, has committed to the U.S. Military Academy, where he will continue his football career.
