Wednesday, May 1, 2013: Pearl River girls run streak to 185

Leading off today: Pearl River extended its unbeaten streak in girls track and field dual meets to 27 straight seasons by defeating Tappen Zee 99-38 on Tuesday.

The Pirates, whose last loss came in 1986, have won 185 meets in a row. The Pirates have won seven straight sectional championships and 25 in the last 28 years.

“It means a lot,” Coach Mike McCafferty, who ran for the boys team from 1996-2001, told The Journal News. “I’d seen this program succeed in the past. It’s just something that hits home.”

A rivalry to follow, uh, religiously: Iona Prep was a pair of weight specialists on the track team who would seem to be a perfect fit for the Catholic High School Athletic Association.

Senior Billy Bishop beat classmate Will Pope at the recent New York Relays on Randalls Island with a personal-best throw of 55 feet, 9 3/4 inches in the shot put, though Pope got the better of him in the discus.

Bishop will attend the University of Pennsylvania and Pope is heading to Penn State in the fall, The Journal News reported.

More track and field: Northeastern Clinton’s Mallory Honan broke the Section 7 record in the girls 100-meter hurdles during a dual-meet loss to Plattsburgh.

Honan was timed in 15.2 seconds, wiping out the 2007 mark of :15,5 by Saranac's Kristie Pageau. She also won the long jump (16-5) and triple jump (34-4).

School closing: Holy Angels Academy in Buffalo will close in June after 152 years in operation, President and Principal Joan Thomas informed students and staff on Tuesday.

“There were 300 people in the gym just sobbing,” Thea Tio, the school’s director of communications, told The Buffalo News. “The juniors were especially upset, and the seniors just had their prom last week. It was ... I don’t like to say horrific, but that’s how it felt.”

School officials cited declining enrollment at the private school, which operates independently from the Diocese of Buffalo.

It's yet another confirmation both of a changing culture and an economy that isn't recovering even remotely as quickly as the middle class needs it to be. Just in the last handful of years, New York City has lost, St. Michael's Academy, St. Peter's Academy and Rice. In Section 5, Nazareth and Geneva DeSales have recently shut their doors.

Benefit scheduled: The Central Square boys lacrosse booster club is hosting a benefit tripleheader Saturday on behalf of Christine LaFave, who is battling breast cancer. She is the wife of Central Square assistant modified lacrosse coach Tom LaFave, who is a former varsity coach with the Redhawks.

Lacrosse action starts at 10 a.m. with the Central Square modified boys playing Fulton. At noon, the Central Square JVs will play Fulton. At 2, the Central Square varsity faces Onondaga. There is no admission, but a donation box will be set up to collect money that will be presented to the LaFaves. A 50-50 raffle, baskets, door prizes and T-shirt sales are also planned.
