Leading off today: Richard Lagano threw a 16-yard touchdown pass to David Pitre with 9.3 seconds to play Friday night, capping a rally that gave
General Brown a 33-30 win over Utica Notre Dame in the opening round of Section 3 Class C football playoffs.
General Brown trailed 17-0 late in the first half, moved ahead on a Zech Pitre (29 carries, 212 yards) 1-yard run with 1:18 left to play, then fell behind again with less than a minute to go.
General Brown, ranked 11th in the state by the NYSSWA after stringing together five straight shutouts, will take on No. 8 Skaneateles, a 49-22 winner over Sherburne-Earlville, next weekend.
The game was held up for an hour to allow a helicopter to transport Notre Dame’s Jordan Crobak to a Syracuse hospital after suffering a possible concussion in the fourth quarter.
Notre Dame sophomore Kevin Warmack, who passed for 344 yards and three TDs on 17-for-24 accuracy, made the score 30-26 with a scoring throw to Zane Smith with :41.4 to go. That set up the winning drive that started at the General Brown 38.
Strong D carries Shen: No. 19 Shenendehowa blanked No. 24 CBA 14-0 for its fourth shutout of the season as two of Section 2's top Class AA teams faced off in Latham.
The Plainsmen got all the coring they would need early in the second quarter as senior Ryan Buss connected with Corey Acker for an 8-yard TD. CBA fumbled the second-half kickoff at its own 13-yard line, with Shenendehowa’s Anthony Lee recovering to set up a 3-yard scoring carry by Marcelino Christie.
CBA was just 1-for-10 through the air and finished with 101 yards of offense.
Timon keeps the momentum: After a 1-2 star, Bishop Timon-St. Jude has rattled off four straight wins, the latest a 17-14 victory over St. Joseph's, the state's No. 5 large school.
The victory was Timon’s first in the rivalry since 2002. St. Joe’s played without injured junior standout Nigel Davis.
After Timon broke to a two-TD lead, St. Joe's tied on junior Rod Payne’s 23-yard run with 3:32 left in the third quarter. Tom Gioia kicked a 39-yard field goal on Timon's subsequent possession for what proved to be the winning points.
Class D progress: Any of a half dozen schools could capture the Section 5 Class D championship in three weeks, but it won't be No. 20 Caledonia-Mumford. The Red Raiders, a state finalist two seasons ago, were blocked from the postseason with a 19-12 loss to Class C No. 10 LeRoy.
Tom Kelso scored on a 3-yard run with :39 left to give the host Oatkan Knights the win. Dylan Johnson had pulled LeRoy into a 12-12 tie with a 21-yard field goal early in th fourth.
