Saturday, Oct. 6, 2012: Jamestown knocks off No. 1 Orchard Park 35-28

Leading off today: Jamestown snapped visiting Orchard Park's 18-game football winning streak Friday, beating the Quakers 35-28 on junior Jake Sisson's 8-yard TD throw to sophomore Stephen Carlson with 3:55 to play.

Orchard Park, the 2011 NYSPHSAA Class AA champion, is ranked No. 1 by the New York State Sportswriters Association and had defeated Jamestown 12 consecutive times.

“It’s a great night for our program and our players,” Jamestown coach Tom Langworthy told The Buffalo News. “We really felt good about our program these last few years, but we needed to get over that last hump, and that was Orchard Park. For tonight, we did that."

Orchard Park battled back from a two-TD deficit to tie 28-28 midway through the fourth quarter, but junior Da’Quan Hollingsworth returned a kickoff to the Orchard Park 29 with 6:32 left to play. Sisson hit sophomore Zach Panebianco over the middle on 4th-and-7 to set up a first-and-goal at the Orchard Park 7.

After the winning TD, the teams traded possessions. An apparent 70-yard OP scoring play on a hook-and-trailer play was called back for an illegal forward pass, and Jamestown closed out the win with a fumble recovery on the next play.

Rouse dazzles again: Baldwinsville's Tyler Rouse single-handedly snapped Liverpool's four-game winning streak, rushing for 382 yards and seven TDs in a 54-29 victory.

Rouse has 1,951 rushing yards and 30 TDs in the Bees' 5-1 start. He carried 29 times, including for 62, 63 and 56 yards on consecutive TDs in the second half.

Eastridge wins clash of unbeatens: Eastridge rushed for 451 of its 498 total yards and got three touchdowns from senior quarterback Alec Mortillaro to beat Victor 35-20 in a matchup of 5-0 Monroe County League teams.

Mortillaro ran 15 times for 145 yards. Senior Jeremiah Ortiz carried 24 times for 258 yards and scored the Lancers' two other TDs.

Victor is ranked fifth and Eastridge sixth in Class A by the NYSSWA.

“It was very satisfying to be able to run the ball,” Eastridge coach Chad Green told the Democrat and Chronicle. “It takes time off the clock, it gains momentum for us. It really set the tone for the game.”

After Victor closed to 28-20, the Lancers generated a 67-yard scoring drive capped by an Ortiz score with 7:02 remaining. Victor then turned the ball over on downs inside the Eastridge 10 on its next possession.

Cornwall clicking: Jeff Grygiel's 52-yard halfback option throw to receiver Chris Bauer late in the third quarter put the finishing touches on No. 9 Cornwall's 38-24 win over No. 19 Wallkill in a Section 9 game between ranked Class A squads.

It was the schools' fifth faceoff in three seasons. Wallkill had won three of the previous four after dropping eight straight by a combined 253-58 margin.

"This game sets the tone for the championship, we definitely will see Wallkill again," Cornwall two-way lineman Connor Staudle told The Times Herald-Record. "It feels great to beat them. We practiced hard all week, we were fired up. We went out there and showed what we were all about."

Section 4 thriller: Class C No. 4 Chenango Forks drove 48 yards in 25 seconds for the tying TD, and sophomore Jack Sherwood converted the extra-point kick with 1:00 to go to fight off Sidney 31-30.

John Colm Sweeney threw 31 yards to Cody DeOrdio for the tying TD less than half a minute after the Warriors went ahead on Billy Kozak’s 26-yard TD catch on a fourth-and-10 play. QB Patrick Vibbard then hit Mike Ward for a two-point conversion with 1:26 remaining.

Lansingburgh, barely: Limited to nine carries for 32 yards in the opening 24 minutes, junior Anthony Walker rushed for 238 yards and four TDs in the second half to spark Class B No. 8 Lansingburgh over No. 12 Ravena-Coeymans-Selkirk 26-21.

Walker has piled up 1,214 through six games. He ran for a 70-yard touchdown up the middle in the third quarter and tied the game at 14 in the fourth with a 55-yard burst. He tacked on scores of 2 and 34 yards to close out the comeback.

"What more can you ask for on a Friday night?" Lansingburgh coach Al McNall asked The Times Union.

Chittenango, too: Junior QB Devin Phelps rambled for 218 yards and two touchdowns as Class B No. 3 Chittenango edged East Syracuse-Minoa 27-26.

ES-M rallied from a two-score deficit to pull within 27-26, but Chittenango successfully defended two two-point conversion attempt twice - first on a pass break-up wiped away by an interference call and then on a run play.

Needing to go 95 yards in the closing minutes, ES-M got to their own 48 with 14.4 seconds left, but the Bears' Josh Cretaro pulled down an interception to end the threat.

Class D collisions: No. 18 Red Jacket recovered a fumble, intercepted a pass and forced No. 7 Clyde-Savannah to turn the ball over on downs three times in the second half in the course of rallying to a 34-27 victory. Junior Kory Fogarty ran 24 times for 120 yards and two touchdowns, and Cyrus Baker scored on a rush and a punt return.

No. 9 Perry got two TD passes from Cory Dillon to defeat No. 13 Caledonia-Mumford 22-12. Dillon was 6-for-13 for 123 yards and also rushed for 72 yards and a score.

No. 16 Sandy Creek edged No. 14 Westmoreland 21-19 as Tyler Swarthout ran for the Comets' first TD and kicked a pair of extra points. Sandy Creek had struggled with extra-point kicks, with three players combining for a 50 percent success rate through five games.

Mason McNitt rushed for 182 yards on 20 carries, including a second-quarter touchdown that gave Sandy Creek a 14-6 lead.

Weedsport, ranked fifth in Class D, fought off Class C No. 16 Canastota 31-13 as Matt Pelc posted five touchdowns, the first three on a 15-yard reception and runs of 40 and 65 yards.

“Matt Pelc is as good a back as there is around here,” Weedsport coach Greg Michaels told The Post-Standard. “He plays at a small school, but there’s no school that he could not step on the field and play well for.”

Slugfest: Cambridge pulled out a 42-34 win at Greenwich in OT after staging a goal-line stand to end the fourth quarter. Senior Matt Parmenter scored his fourth TD of the game to open the overtime, and Cambridge stopped Greenwich's possession to end it.

Greenwich junior John Barnes rushed for 41 times for 360 yards and three touchdowns to offset Parmenter's 23 rushes for 143 yards.

Quick hits: Iroquois fought back from a 22-3 deficit at the half and defeated Hamburg 29-22. Nate Wilkinson caught three TD passes from Matt Keating, and Tyler Miller rushed for 181 yards.

Jason Ceneus returned the second-half kickoff 90 yards for the game’s only points as Class AA No. 6 New Rochelle topped Mahopac 6-0. Ceneus also intercepted a pass in the end zone after Mahopac drove into New Rochelle territory with under a minute to play.

First-year Oswego coach Mike Conners returned to his longtime home and came away with a 22-6 win over Fulton.

Brad Burns passed his brother John Burns to become the all-time leading rusher in Hoosick Falls history with 3,331 yards during a 47-0 romp over Corinth.

Lake George rallied from a 24-6 deficit at the half to beat Whitehall 40-30.
