Monday, Sept. 10, 2012: Hornell owns nation's second-longest win streak

Leading off today: Hornell's 41-game run through New York football competition now ranked as the second-longest active streak in the country, MaxPreps reported this weekend.

The Red Raiders ascended to No. 2 when Don Bosco Prep of New Jersey traveled to Annapolis, Md., over the weekend and lost for the first time in four years. The Gilman School beat DBP 13-6 at Navy-Marine Corps Stadium to end the Ironmen's 46-game streak.

Hornell, winner of three straight NYSPHSAA Class B championships but playing in Class C this fall, defeated Wellsville 40-6 to improve to 2-0 for the season and extend the No. 2 streak in Section 5 history to 41. The New York record for consecutive wins is 55 by Massena, ended in 1957. (See all-time state streaks here.)    Senior Rich Harkenrider completed 7 of 9 passes for 206 yards and three touchdowns, and Brendan Buisch caught two scoring strikes for Hornell.

The nation's longest active streak belongs to Clairton, Pa., High, which defeated Carnegie, Pa., Carlynton 50-7 on Friday for its 49th consecutive win as senior running back Tyler Boyd rushed for four touchdowns and scored a fifth on a 55-yard punt return.

Clairton was 16-0 a year ago with nine shutouts and 705-78 scoring margin. The Bears have won three straight Pennsylvania Class A championships.

Right behind Hornell on the active list are Waunakee, Wis., at 39 and Truckee, Calif., at 38.

Sunday action: Bad weather shut down the Edgemont vs. Irvington game in Section 1 in mid-overtime on Saturday. When they resumed Sunday, Edgemont’s Jackson Stone hit Mike Rothstein for a 2-point conversion and a 42-41 win in four OTs.

The game was halted Saturday with Irvington leading 28-21 midway through the first overtime.

Shoran Tamura caught a touchdown pass in the third overtime, but Irvington missed the extra point. Stone then threw a 20-yard TD pass to Ben Levy to tie, but the extra-point attempt was blocked.

Irvington scored in the fourth OT, but Stone threw a 5-yard touchdown pass to Chris Kim, setting up the 2-point conversion.

Looking ahead: Section 9 observers will be watching closely Friday when Warwick takes on Monroe-Woodbury in a non-leaguer.

Warwick, coming off a 49-20 win over Goshen, hasn't beaten M-W since 1979. A win over the Crusaders would make the Wildcats the first Section 9 team to beat Newburgh and M-W during the same regular season since Kingston in 1996.
