Leading off today: An associate director of the New Mexico Activities Association is on the verge of becoming executive director of the NYSPHSAA, two southwestern newspapers are reporting.
The Albuquerque Journal and Santa Fe New Mexican both reported Friday that Robert Zayas confirmed being offered the New York State Public High School Athletic Association position left vacant with the retirement of Nina Van Erk.
“If everything works out, and I hope it does, I will be executive director by Sept. 1,” Zayas told the Albuquerque paper.
Zayas, 36, has a contract in hand and could be confirmed when the NYSPHSAA Central and Executive Committees conduct their annual meetings July 31-Aug. 2 in Lake George.
Zayas, who also serves as the media director, joined the NMAA staff in August 2002. He has been an associate director the past two years and is working toward his doctorate in philosophy and sports administration at The University of New Mexico.
