John Moriello's NYSSWA blog
Tuesday, June 14, 2011 (continued): Tottenville's Cornelius picks SU

That came to an end Monday with the announcement STSN, which received the Community Service Award from Chapter 4 of the New York State Athletic Administrators Association in 2010, has suspended operations.

"I cannot say enough about the support we have received from all the schools in the Greater Binghamton area, the many businesses and organizations which partnered with STSN, our extremely loyal sponsor-advertisers, and the well over 100,000 visitors that have logged onto the site over the last 5 years," STSN President and CEO Matt Brannen said in a statement.

The site will maintain its archive of about 1,300 games and interviews through August 2012.

The blotter: It hasn't been a particularly good week or so for some of the adults who coach or supervise our kids, starting with an athletic director who was the subject of a much more upbeat story last fall.

In November, Erasmus Hall AD Mashall Tames' life was saved by a former player after he suffered a heart attack while working the PA in a stadium press box.

Tames returned to the headlines this month. He was arrested June 2, accused of attacking a school security guard who apparently did not open a parking gate quickly enough for him. Tames' job is reportedly on the line after 36 years with the Department of Education, Rivals.com reported.

Witnesses said the guard was doing metal detector scans on students when Tames tried to get her to open the gate. The guard said Tames would have to wait, but he demanded she hand her keys over so a student could open the gate for him. The guard refused, triggering heated words after which Tames allegedly slapped the female guard.

Bronx rumble: This is reason No. 37 why it helps to have nose plugs to fight off the stench of some AAU basketball activity.

The New York Post reports coaches of two elite AAU girls basketball coaches traded haymakers with each other as well as two players in a Sunday fracas at Fordham University.

It happened following a game in the -- and I'm not making this up -- "Rumble in the Bronx" tournament as participants went through the handshake line after the Lady Gauchos under-16 team defeated the Exodus Swagga squad.

  •    Exodus coach Lenair "Dinero" Young allegedly punched Gauchos coach Earl Elliotte after Elliotte cursed Exodus players, the paper reported, citing sources. Exodus player Tamara Jones said Gauchos coach Elliotte then punched her in the face and later kicked her in the head as she fell to the ground. Gauchos player Shakila Small was punched in the face by Exodus coach Young, the player's father alleges.

Police were called but no arrests were made.

DWI charge: Aquinas third-year softball coach Paul Monachino, also an East Rochester police officer, was involved in a head-on crash in Perinton early Tuesday morning after which he was accused of driving drunk, the Democrat and Chronicle reported.

Monachino, 39, crashed his pickup into a minivan, Cpl. John Helfer of the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office told the paper. Monachino was taken to Strong Memorial Hospital and listed in satisfactory condition, and three teens in the other vehicle were also injured. Driver Christopher P. Dorofy, 18, broke both legs and was listed in satisfactory condition.

Monachino was charged with driving while intoxicated, a misdemeanor.
